ISLAMABAD –The sub-committee of the Senate Standing Committee on Federal Education and Professional Training directed the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman Dr Mukhtar to review illegal appointments and promotions, besides allocation of funds for PhD scholarships at Hazara University and present the report to it in a week.
The sub-committee, which met here with Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Senator Sehar Kamran in the chair, reviewed educational programmes and appointments of officials from Grade 1 to 22 in the university. Besides Senator Muhammad Javaid Abbasi and Mushahid Hussain Syed, HEC Chairman Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, Federal Education Secretary Muhammad Hamayun, Acting Vice Chancellor Habibullah, former VC Sohail Shahid and JAE RafiqTahir attended the meeting.
The HEC chairman informed the committee that the vice chancellor at the university could not be appointed for two and a half years. Similarly, nine other universities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Sindh have been working without the vice chancellors.The committee convener observed that education played an important role in the development of any country and regretted higher educational institutions in Pakistan had been working without heads.
Dr Mukhtar said that about 25 to 30 students of the university were awarded scholarships for PhD, who had returned to the country after completing their degrees abroad. The sub-committee decided that it would review the matter again after a week.
